-History of various Security Threat Groups

Many Security Threat Groups fall under Folk and Family categories.

This categorization of affiliation started in 1978.The purpose of this management system was to establish unity and order among various groups. These categories created a way to eliminate friction in prison by using an understood and agreed upon organization method. This method relies on alliances between groups.

Folks and People are not gangs, but nations or alliances. There are many small contingents within each large nation.

People
People nation are mainly BPS, VL & LK groups. Known symbols for the people nation are the 5 pt. Star and the crescent moon. Gang identifiers are mostly represented to the left. These include hats, pant legs, and bandannas.

Folks
Mainly GDs, BDs, SCR & LDs gangs are known to represent the Folk nation. Folk stands for Follow the Orders and Laws the Kings Sets. The Folk nation symbols are the 6 pt. star and pitchforks. Folk nation identify to the right.

Other Security Threat Groups include Nazi, KKK, Trenchcoat Mafia, and the Taliban. Ethnicity and cultural background do not lend themselves as an identifier for a Security Threat Group. Behaviors and intent are a better judge of a group's purpose than ethnicity or culture.

-Hand signs, graffiti and symbols used by various Security Threat Groups
nativeamericangangs.jpg
Each Security Threat Group has its own language of identifiers. These identifiers come in the form of hand symbols, text, and stylized logos that work as advertisement of their group or nation. Within the sections of this website that were designed for specific gangs there will be a description of the identifiers that set it apart from other groups.

Many members no longer wear identifiers. Sport Team Logos can show loyalty towards a nation. Some signs of gang/Security Threat Groups affiliation includes multiple clothing of the same type (brand or team loyalty). Team colors can also present affiliation.
